PALMER (BARTER), Florence Agnes – 84, of Herring Cove. It is with sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend on October 7, 2011 at the Halifax Infirmary. Born on May 29, 1927, Florence was the eldest child of Frank and Nellie Barter. She studied Nursing at the Halifax Infirmary, graduating in 1947. After graduation, she worked in the TB ward where she also instructed nursing students about TB and communicable diseases. It was there she met her future husband, John Palmer. They married in 1956, and soon moved to Herring Cove, where they lived for the next 53 years, in the home they built together. Her main pleasures were spending time with her true love John and her six children and 15 grandchildren. She and John loved to travel, and for many years, made numerous drives to Florida, especially near Christmas, for the ‘Turkey Run”. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Paul’s Parish in Herring Cove. In the last two years, she loved to make daily trips across the hall to talk with her new friends at Anchor Drive, and share “Tuesday lunches” with them. She was predeceased by her parents and her husband John. She is survived by her children John (Nancy) of Lower Sackville; Kathy (Gary) MacDonald of Halifax; Nancy (Paul) McKenna of Herring Cove; David (Nancy) of Herring Cove; Mark (Sarah Fells) of Yarmouth; and Chris (Heather) of Aylesford. She leaves behind her wonderful grandchildren: Nicole, Matthew, Justin, Kevin, Bradley, Alexandra, Christopher, Olivia, Dale, Rachel, Molly, Emma, Noah, Chloe and Sarah; her six brothers and four sisters, all still surviving: Frank, Dick, Pat, Peter, Bill, Don, Rosemary, Dorothy, Corrine and Carol. Florence will be greatly missed by everyone who had the good fortune of making her acquaintance. We wish to express our sincere thanks to all the Staff of 8.4, Halifax Infirmary, and especially to Dr. Christy Bussey for her kindness, compassion and extraordinary care of our mother. We would also like to extend a sincere thank you to Jackie Bell for her ongoing, caring visits with our mom. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Clayton Park. Visitation Tuesday, October 11 between 7-9 pm. Funeral will be held Wednesday, October 12 at 11 am, St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Herring Cove, with burial in Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Florence may be made to The Canadian Cancer Society or The Arthritis Society of Canada. Online condolences at www.jasnowfuneralhome.com. We will forever miss you, Mom.
