

75,of Halifax, died Saturday, November 1, 2014 at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born February 4, 1939 in Halifax he was the eldest son of the late Henry John (Harry) and Florence Mary (Ryan) Hammond.
Francis attended St. Patricks High School, and graduated from St. Marys University (BComm) in 1960. An avid sports enthusiast, he played both hockey and football in high school and university. He worked for Canada Revenue Agency, retiring due to ill health. He was a member of the Waegwoltic club for many years. He was a client of the VON-Breakaway program for 8 years.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Barbara Judith (McCaffrey) Hammond. He was proud father to Monica Clare (Gregory) Beck, Halifax, Mary Christine (Terry) Gerhardt, Falmouth, and Philip Andrew(Taralee), Halifax; and loving granddad to Matthew, Hilary and Sophie Beck, Nicholas and Jacob Gerhardt, Nathan and Grace Hammond. He is also survived by brother Joseph (Peggy) Hammond and several cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by several aunts and uncles.
Special thanks to Dr. Adrienne Watson and Dr. Keri-Leigh Cassidy, CDHA Palliative Care Team, VON and the countless caregivers with Continuing Care and RJF who provided compassionate support to both Francis and family. We would also like to acknowledge the continuing support provided by our friends and neighbors as well as Fr. Michael Grace, Fr. James Mallon and past support over many years from the late Fr. Lloyd O’Neill.
Visitation will take place Monday, November 3 from 2-4 and 6-8 in JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr.Halifax. Funeral Mass to celebrate his life will take place Tuesday, November 4 at 10:30 am in Saint Benedict Catholic church, Fr. Michael Grace officiating. Reception to follow in church hall. Cremation to follow and interment of ashes to take place at Mount Olivet Cremation Garden, Mumford Road at a later date.
St. Patricks Church held a special place in Francis’ heart; as the place his parents were married and he made his First Communion and sang in the choir. In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Patricks Church “Lend a Hand” restoration fund, or to St. Vincent de Paul Society, C/O Saint Benedict Church.
