Bailly, Frank R. (Bill)- After a full and eventful life, at age 102, Bill passed away peacefully at Arborstone Nursing Home in Halifax on November 21, 2011. Born in Lunenburg, he was the son of Harry and Willietta (Curell) Bailly, one of the founding families of Lunenburg. He is survived by his son William R. (Pat). He was predeceased by his first wife Kathleen (Martin) and second wife Mildred (Hardiman); sister Margaret Stoker; brothers, George, Harold, Earl and Don. In his early years he worked as a blacksmith in the family blacksmith shop in Lunenburg, following the trade of his father and grandfather. Later he trained and became a certified plumber and steamfitter, working with Hagen & Co., JD Bremner, Honeywell Controls and Mt. St. Vincent (25 years) retiring as Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor. He was a man with a real “zest” for life. In his youth he was very active in all sports, but particularly in hockey, where in the 1930’s, he had a try-out with the Boston Bruins, while living in Boston. Returning to Halifax, he played senior hockey, later becoming coach of the Nova Scotia Technical College Team (now Dal) in the intercollegiate league. He was also coach of the Melville Cove Entry in the Northwest Arm League.
Possessing a fine voice, he sang for local audiences and was a long time member of the Barbershop Choir. He was also a member of the Armdale Yacht Club and won several Provincial and Maritime Bluenose Class Championships with John Snow Sr., and “Hoppy” Hopkins. Outgoing and gregarious, he was liked by all and will be especially missed by Bill and Pat; grandchildren Tim (Marianne), Ann Rutledge (Blair), Jane Reno (Chris) and nine great grandchildren, Brian, Scott, Matthew, Catherine, Christopher, Michael, Katie, Allison, and Amy; niece, Suzanne and nephew Ron. He came from a world of hard work, good neighbourliness, and love, and has moved to another world without pain, with the God who gives him peace. In his personal life he was always a warm-hearted out-going person. A good story teller with interesting and historic local connections – he was always good company! He was a man of great inner strength, courage and loyalty. His curiosity, thirst for knowledge and sense of adventure never left him. He had a keen mind until the end. To Dad’s caregivers we will always be grateful- especially to Debbi Goguen; we express our profound gratitude for her unwavering and dedicated care of Dad and to us all. We also pay tribute and thanks to the nurses and staff at Arborstone Nursing Home where Dad was a resident for the last eight months. Prior to that he was still in his own home. Funeral arrangements will be under the direction of J. A. Snow Funeral Home and honouring Dad’s wishes cremation has taken place. Visitation will be at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, on Friday November 25, 2011 from 2-4pm, with a memorial service at 7pm, reception to follow. Family flowers only by request. Memorial gifts to a charity of choice. A private family burial will take place on Saturday in Fairview Cemetery. Email condolences to [email protected]
