Frederick "Ted" Newman Wilmshurst, born on June 22, 1940, in Newport, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully at the age of 84, at Parkstone Enhanced Care, after a fulfilling life marked by dedication to education, passion for the arts, and love for family. After graduating from Dalhousie University, Ted began his career as a teacher in Dartmouth. He continued to inspire students throughout his career at Major Stevens, before finding a long-term home at Queen Elizabeth High School (QEH). At QEH, Ted taught economics and geography, while also leaving his creative mark by producing numerous high school musicals, including Guys and Dolls, Bye Bye Birdie, and The Music Man.
Upon retirement, Ted enjoyed a variety of hobbies. He became an avid gardener and spent time traveling extensively during the “off season,” visiting six of the seven continents: Oceania, Europe, South America, North America, Africa, and Asia. When at home, he found joy in simple pleasures like sipping a good scotch, playing games such as cribbage, hearts, and Yahtzee, and engaging in crossword puzzles. He also kept up with current affairs, faithfully following CNN, and took an interest in the world around him.
Living on Spring Garden Road, Ted loved observing the changing seasons, often walking through the Public Gardens to appreciate the blooms and attending the free concerts at the bandstand. A season ticket holder for the Halifax Wanderers, Ted never missed a game and proudly wore his Wanderers baseball hat.
Ted is survived by his daughters, Deanna Wilmshurst (Niels Nielsen) and Alina Gavel (Ben Gavel), as well as his beloved grandchildren, Madelyn Nielsen, Oliver Gavel, Abbey Gavel, and Summer Nielsen. He also leaves behind two brothers, Bruce Wilmshurst (Joy Wilmshurst) and Brian Wilmshurst (Judy Wilmshurst), along with numerous nieces and nephews. Ted was predeceased by his wife, Dolores Wilmshurst, and his brother, Ron Wilmshurst.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2025, from 2-4 pm at the home of Alina Gavel.
In lieu of donations, please plant something beautiful in your garden in honour of Ted’s love for nature.
