Belmore, Gary Kenneth – 78, of Halifax passed away peacefully on May 5, 2013 surrounded by family after a short but difficult battle with Asbestosis. Born in Halifax he was the only child of the late Geraldine (Belmore) Joudrey. He was educated in Schools for the Deaf in Ontario and in Halifax where he met his wife of 56 years Jacqueline (Johnston) Belmore whom we lost in 2012. Gary was a self described jack of all trades as demonstrated by this work history: Eastern Canada Stevedores, the Dockyard, Harris Rebar, several flooring companies (Bryant Flooring, Argo Flooring and Fuzzy Side Up), plus owned and operated his own flooring business over the years. He owned and operated Belmore’s Fish & Chips in Mahone Bay in the early 70’s and worked many years as a logger.
He was happiest in the log home he built by hand outside of Shubenacadie. On this property he enjoyed tending his large vegetable garden, and he loved to cook then share the fruits of his labour with family and friends. Time spent with his Belmore cousins at the home of his treasured Grandparents’ in Caribou Gold Mines, NS were some of his fondest memories.
He was a strong advocate for the Deaf community and served as President of the Halifax Association of the Deaf as well as Chairperson of the Eastern Canada Association of the Deaf in the 1970’s. Through his leadership he was instrumental in bringing the TTY into the homes of the deaf in the mid-seventies. He also contributed to the Deaf community through organizing sporting events, such as broomball and curling.
He will be lovingly remembered by his companion Mary Green, children, Wade (Gail) and Susan (Joe Vermes) of Halifax, David Manuel (Anita) of Ottawa, and his grandsons (Dylan Belmore, Matthew and Jason Vermes). In addition to his mother and wife he was also predeceased by his infant son Aubrey and a number of aunts, uncles and his cousins Shirley Dale and Colleen.
A celebration of life will be held Thursday, May 9, 2013 in the Shirley Bernstein Hall in Northwood Nursing Home between 7:00 and 8:30pm. A brief service will be held at 7:30pm.
A private burial will take place at a later date.
