George’s life was a success story. Not for wealth amassed or possessions accumulated. George was rich in family. A tycoon in terms of friendships. His greatest treasures were his wife of 56 years, Tassia, son Christos and daughter Maria. “Pappou” called his grandsons, Jacob & Peter, “pieces of gold”.
George was born and raised in the mountainside village of Paparis, Greece, where, as a boy, he was a shepherd, then trained as a mechanic before leaving for Canada at age 19. Landing in Halifax’s Pier 21 with $17 in his pocket and no English, George would, within three years (and in partnership with his brother Louis), open a restaurant. The Tasty Food was, for 33 years, a Halifax institution where George and Tassia served delicious meals to appreciative customers. That those customers often
became friends was a testament to the love that George sprinkled into every dish.
Extremely handsome, young George courted the beautiful Tassia (Mandrapilias) with flare and determination. The two were married in 1965. In 1966, they welcomed Christos. Maria arrived in 1971. That Christos became an engineer and Maria a doctor brought George tremendous pride. He also dearly loved watching his grandsons play sports.
A man of deep faith, George was a devoted and highly respected member of the Jehovah’s Witness community. His commitment to serving God by serving others was the stamp he placed on life, every day.
A nature lover, beautiful singer, and a driver of immaculately kept cars, George’s passions were simple and sincere. He loved to listen to music of his homeland and instilled the love of Greek dancing in his children. He was a man of honor and faith, compassion and generosity. George will be forever remembered as a man who brought happiness to others, often in the form of his famous rice pudding and coconut cream pies.
George leaves behind Tassia; son Christos (Deborah) and daughter Maria (David) and grandsons Jacob and Peter. He was predeceased by his parents, Christos and Maria, and brothers Vasilios and Louis.
The family would like to thank George’s long time family doctor and friend, Dr. Morris Trager, as well as the staff on 8.2 at the QEII for their care. A special thanks to Northwood Home Care and the community palliative care team for their compassionate care during the final weeks.
