I first met George over 30 years ago.  His passion for the Gaelic language and celtic music was palpable.  It was always such a pleasure to come to an event and have that big, bright smile and warm hug welcoming us. All who knew him, loved him.  I had such respect for George for how much he put into the preservation of the Gaelic language and song, and his support for east coast artists. May his soul rest in peace.  My sincere condolences to all of his loved ones, especially Bill and Jennie.  Thank you for keeping me updated on George’s health. He was a dear friend from the very beginning.

It’s hard to think of George without a smile coming to the face as he always had such a smile every time you saw him.  His contributions to Gaelic song traditions in Nova Scotia were many and still valued by the Gaelic community. He often had one of his little table-top, battery powered fans on the table at music sessions but he won’t need that now as joins his fellow greats above.   Thig crioch air an t-saoghal  ach mairidh ceol agus gaol.  The world may crumble but music and love will endure.

I initally met George at ECMAs. After that, I started running into him at The Celtic Colours  Festival here in Cape Breton  an event that he attended religiously for many years. He quickly became a familiar face, always there, always welcome, always willing to jump in and help.  He made many friends through Colours, from locals to  internationally known musicians and visitors from far and wide. He will be remembered fondly, and certainly missed by all who knew him! May he rest in peace, surrounded by music.

So sorry to read of George's passing . On-line and in-person, he was a staunch supporter & defender of all things Celtic --and especially Gaelic. He will certainly be greatly missed! "Beannachd leibh, a charaid!"

George was the greatest. He came to all the shows, supported the local bands and was the most enthusiastic audience member, to say nothing of his being knowledgeable about both the scene and the music. He has been missed and will continue to be so.

Before I left to move to Ontario, there weren’t many Friday nights that George and I couldn’t be found on our stools at The Old Triangle or the Celtic Corner singing, along to all the songs that the bands were playing. Come to think of it, it wasn’t just Fridays… It was Wednesdays, Thursdays, Sundays, and sometimes Mondays and Tuesdays. He was a great friend and I have missed him over these last eight years being in Ontario.  He taught me a lot about Celtic music, and anything Cape Breton. Bless him.

I loved George. He has been such a wonderful part of the Halifax Celtic&Folk Music scene for decades. George could always be counted on for his wonderful demeanor, and for being such a fantastic supporter of local musicians. Regardless of what he had going on in life, George was ever the optimist and always brought his very best to any table, cheering on the players and recording their shows, even when it was not an easy feat.  George was as lovely and engaging towards those of us who were not up on stage at The Triangle, or in a Song Circle at O'Carroll's--such genuine warmth and unconditional friendship is rare. I will miss George, and I am forever grateful to have had the opportunity to know him, and spend so many fun evenings with such a lovely human being.
