Gloria passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on October 10, 2023, aged 84. She was the eldest of three daughters born to Luigi Martine and Carmela Fraracci of Port Colborne, Ontario. Her primary years of schooling were spent in the care of the Loretto nuns (Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary), where she showed an early aptitude for academic achievement and was known as a voracious reader, which she remained to the end. She proceeded to Port Colborne High School and then to the University of Toronto, becoming the first female student from Port Colborne to travel farther afield than Hamilton to obtain a university degree. Gloria subsequently completed her studies with a teaching diploma and taught high school Geography and History for twelve years, after which she left teaching to raise her family. Later, she enjoyed being a sales associate at The Bay’s flagship store in downtown Toronto. Gloria was a keen gardener, twice winning a coveted Trillium Award from the Borough of Scarborough. Following her husband’s retirement, they moved to Nova Scotia to enjoy their senior years where they had spent many happy family vacations. Gloria is survived by her devoted husband of 60 years, John; son John (Catarina) of Brampton; daughter Fiona of Halifax; sisters Dolores and Louise (Terry Green), and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be sorely missed by friends and family in Nova Scotia, Ontario, the US and the UK. Following cremation, a private interment will take place in Port Colborne at a future date. To commemorate Gloria’s passing, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia.
