

Gloria Ruth Turner – 86, of Herring Cove, passed away on Saturday, November 24, 2012. As per her wishes, Gloria passed away peacefully at home after a long illness. Gloria was born in October 1926 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was the daughter of the late Patrick and Lola (Reyno) Sullivan.
Gloria attended St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School and graduated from St. Patrick High School. Following graduation, Gloria successfully completed a federal government secretarial program in order to work at the Halifax Dockyard during WWII. Following the war, Gloria worked for Imperial Oil. She also worked at CIBC on Spring Garden Road and for many years at Mount St. Vincent. Gloria was a lifelong member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. In that capacity, she organized many charitable events for cystic fibrosis. Gloria loved music. She performed vocally on stage in productions in Halifax in her youth and sang in her church choir at St. Paul's. She was a lifelong piano player for family and friends, leading sing-alongs. In recent years, she entertained residents in Northwood Manor. In Herring Cove, Gloria was a school trustee and a Minister of the Eucharist at St. Paul's. Gloria enjoyed people. In addition to her family, Gloria was also a confidant to her children's friends and was often visited by neighbours. Wherever she went, people came up to chat. Gloria had a lifelong group of friends, "the crowd", who gathered in one another's homes in Halifax, Prospect and Herring Cove over the past sixty-five years.
Gloria was predeceased by her son, Pat and her husband, Frank. She was also predeceased by her brothers Bob and Carl and by her sister, Sybil (Dostaler). She is survived by her sister, Patsy (Doherety). Gloria is also survived by her sons, Michael (Joanne Arthur), Bob (Joanne Hamm) and Bruce (Barb Laing). Gloria was Nana to eight grand-children: Jonathan, Kathryn, Jacklyn, Jamie, Kyle, Meagan, Christopher and Natalie. Her niece Paula's two children also called her Nana as did her five great-grand-children. She was a beloved aunt and great aunt to her many nieces and nephews and loved by her many cousins.
Following cremation, a funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated by Fr. Zach Romanowsky on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Herring Cove. Internment to follow at St. Paul's Cemetery, Herring Cove. Thank you Father, for your prayers and many visits throughout Gloria's illness. After the burial, family and friends are invited to a reception at St. Paul's Parish Hall, Herring Cove.
Those who would like to make a charitable donation in Gloria's memory are asked to remember the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Cancer Society.
Many thanks to Dr. Higgins and the Palliative Care staff, the VON and to the caregivers from Bayshore and We Care. Their attentive care throughout Gloria's illness made it possible for her to remain with her loved ones at home. Herring Cove has lost a matriarch who will be fondly remembered by all.
