Gloria was born on June 7, 1942, “down home” in Terence Bay. The fifth of nine children of Robert and Evelyn (Ryan) Slaunwhite, she grew up in a busy household where music always filled the air.
Gloria met her husband, Albert Walker, on December 1, 1957, and together they built an incredible life that spanned over 45 years. Juggling the many moving pieces of family life, Gloria was endlessly hardworking. She supported Albert in the family businesses, kept their home running, and raised their six children: Kimberley, Wanda, Alvera, Lisa, Darryl, and Melanie.
Albert often said that Gloria “put the salt in the sea,” and we still believe that’s true. She was generous beyond measure and quietly elegant. Her hair was always done, her nails polished, and her outfits stylish, but it was her warmth, humour, and soft heart that made the biggest impression. She saw the good in everyone, and she knew how to have a great time. Her sharp sense of humour kept us laughing until the very end.
A homebody at heart, Gloria’s home was always full, and she opened it to many over the years. It was a place where people were always welcomed, well-fed, and made to feel important. Whether hosting extravagant parties, holiday gatherings, Sunday meals, or just sitting around playing the guitar, Gloria created space for everyone, and laughter came easy. Her happiest moments were the simple ones: laughing, singing, and sharing stories around a full table. She believed in God, and in the stars too - your birthday card always came with your horoscope, just in case.
She was deeply proud of her children and lit up even more when she became “Nanny.” Her grandkids adored her, and the feeling was mutual. She made each one feel special.
We will miss her immensely, but we know she was greeted in heaven by many who left before her.
She was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Evelyn; her husband, Albert; her infant son, James Andrew; her granddaughter, Kayla; her sisters, Peggy, Hilda, Angel, Debbie, Kathleen; and her brothers, Bob and Sam.
Gloria is survived by her daughters, Kimberley (Philip), Wanda (Jeff), Alvera (Maurice), Lisa, and Melanie (Shawn); her grandchildren, Lindsay (Chris), Mark (Olivia), Andrew, Austin (Josie), Channing, Evelyn; her great-grandchildren, Ivan and Winter; her sister, Paulette; and her dear friend, Roy.
Mom was the true matriarch of our family, and her impact was felt far and wide. She lived a beautiful, layered life, and never lost sight of where she came from. We can never fully put into words what she meant to us, but we know this: her legacy is love, and it will live on in each of us.
Our family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of Palliative Care for their kindness and support. We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to the incredible team at Hospice Halifax for their compassionate care in Mom’s final days. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gloria’s memory may be made to Hospice Halifax.
A celebration of life service will be held at JA Snow Funeral Home at 339 Lacewood Drive on Friday, August 22, 2025, at 10:00am.
