Goldie spent her youth in what would become the shadow of the McDonald bridge on Barrington and Brunswick Streets. Her formative years, as a young girl and teenager coincided with World War II, which shaped her thrifty lifestyle. She learned the value of a penny as she labelled caned goods, destined for Europe, salvaged by her father and Captain Witherspoon from relief ships sunk off Halifax Harbour by German U boats. She also came to love music as her and her sister Betty vocally fronted a swing band that played for sailors and soldiers en route to the battlefields of the North Atlantic and Europe.
Goldie picked up a penpal located in the lumber camps of Vancouver Island by the name of Arnold Baker. Arnold and his father took the train to Nova Scotia to see brother Wilfred who was married to Goldie’s sister Ida.
Goldie and Arnold would ultimately marry on August 7, 1950. They subsequently moved, with young son Douglas, to the village of Rockingham, where son Vincent was born. Here they made a home, lifelong friends and a strong commitment to Saint Peter’s Anglican Church. It was during this time between 1965 and 1985 that she worked for Sears Canada.
Goldie loved to bake and over the years knit countless items for charity. She was loved by many and always had a kind word for family and friends, old and new.
She will be missed.
