It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to an amazing husband, dad and grandfather (morfar/farfar) who passed away on December 29, 2021 at the QEII Health Sciences Centre. Born in 1940 to Harald and Randi Norve, Harald Jr. grew up in Aalesund, Norway and attended college in Sweden to study engineering. He was predeceased by his three siblings, Hilde, Ellen, Asbjorn, all of whom resided in his hometown. After a successful service in the Norwegian Navy, he wanted to see the world and immigrated to Canada in 1964. He met a fellow Norwegian, Sissel, who became his lifelong partner of 55 years.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Sissel (Natvik) four children Randi Monroe (George), Ellen Drysdale, Astrid Daigle (David), Rasmus Norve (Crystal Leigh) and 12 grandchildren (Cameron, Annika, Ian, Freya, Erik, Andrew, Matt, Britt, Elsa, Siri, Kai and Elli). From family dinners, walks on the waterfront to drives, Morfar was happy if he was with his family and in motion. All his grandchildren will remember him for his abundance of treats, expert candy making, incredible snuggles, jam making, picture taking, chauffeuring and constant cheerful whistling. Every year he looked forward to hosting an extensive Easter egg hunt for all of his grandchildren. He was their number one super-fan.
Harald loved the water and much of his career was in ocean-related businesses: Irish moss, herring and seafood import/export. He was a huge fan of the Halifax waterfront and container pier where he walked/drove the route everyday he could. Harald was a proud Canadian citizen and had a passion for politics at all levels, where he made many lifelong friends.
Harald was an extremely proud man, particularly of his Norwegian heritage and his children and grandchildren. He loved nothing better than being together, especially at Christmas, when he got to celebrate his Norwegian traditions, decorate his house with white lights, beautiful flowers, and candles. Christmas will never be the same without his spirit. He will be dearly missed. Skal to this loving man.
Thank you to the team in the QEII ER, 6.2 and CCU teams who took care of our dad in August and his most recent visit this week. A special thank you to Dr. Brown who has provided dad with amazing care over the past 10 years. Donations can be made to the QEII Foundation or to the charity of your choice. A family celebration of Harald’s life will happen at a later date. “Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal.”
