

Harold Edgar Henneberry, 100, of Sambro, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on January 31, 2015. Born in Sambro, he was the eldest of 12 children born to Augustus and Helene (nee Twohig) Henneberry.
A self-educated man, Harold was a fisherman and started fishing at an early age with his father and siblings by his side. He was well-known for his skill of harpooning swordfish and as a navigator. Captain of the Angela B. Mills, he and six crewmen were lost at sea off of the Grandbanks of NL in 1956 and survived seven days in the North Atlantic after rowing 300 miles in dories before being rescued. Harold’s story was the inspiration for the movie ‘The Disappeared’, which premiered at the Atlantic Film Festival in 2012.
Harold loved music and taught himself to play the fiddle (many of which he made himself), the mandolin, banjo, piano and harmonica. Not one to be defined by age, Harold took up artistic painting and wood carving in his 80’s. Drafted for WWII, he went through basic training but the war ended before we he was sent overseas. Harold was a beloved member of his large family and was a respected and admired patriarch for his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. A great storyteller always ready to entertain, he was also a pillar of his community in Sambro and loved by many.
Predeceased by Geraldine (nee MacFarland) the love of his life and wife of 56 years, Harold was also predeceased by children Sandy, Judy and Wade and siblings Charles, Cyril, Gus, Louis, Alan, Norman, Nora, Netty and Vera.
He is survived by children Patsy (Danny) Darrell (Judy), Carter (Eleanor), Angela and siblings Danny, Thelma (Bunny), grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great- grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at JA Snow Funeral Home 339 Lacewood Dr., Clayton Park, Halifax, NS on Wednesday Feb 4, 2015 from 6-8 and Thursday Feb 5, 2015 from 2-4. A graveside service will be held at a later date.
The family would like to thank the home care workers from Northwood for their kindness, caring, and generous support they showed Harold over last several years.
Memorial donations may be made to the ALS Society and the MS Society in lieu of flowers.
