The family of Harvey Edwin Crowell, 55, of Halifax, is saddened to announce his sudden passing on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016. Born in Halifax, he was the only child of Edwin Crowell, Halifax, and the late Elizabeth Jean (Titus) Crowell.
Harvey’s exuberance for life was evident to all who knew him. He had a robust sense of humour, was exceptionally generous and extremely loyal and kind to his legions of friends. Harvey saved his greatest love for his family, especially his wife and high-school sweetheart, Marie, with whom he recently celebrated 29 years of marriage, and his cherished daughters, Kristin and Lauren.
Harvey attended Queen Elizabeth High School, where he played on the Lions’ football team. In 1983, he graduated from Acadia University with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He served as a student representative on the Acadia Senate during his undergraduate studies. He was extremely proud of his connection to Acadia, was very active in alumni events and continued the Crowell family tradition of generously supporting the university over many years.
Harvey spent 25 years with Sandvik Saws and Tools during his business career. He also partnered with his family in a successful retail enterprise over the past few years.
Harvey took particular delight in the time spent with family and friends at the Crowell summer residence in Hubbards, where he was equally at home piloting his boat through local waterways or cutting a rug at the Shore Club dances.
He sailed for many years and was an active member at Hubbards Yacht Club.
Harvey was an accomplished golfer and a lifelong member of Ashburn Golf Club, where he learned the game at an early age from his talented and legendary father, Eddie, a Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame golfer. Harvey looked forward to his regular games with the “Friday Afternoon Guys,” and his many other friends at Ashburn. He played for many years in the Halifax gentlemen’s basketball league and was a longtime member of The Halifax Club. He was a board member of theatre company Kazan Co-op.
The Miami Dolphins were fortunate to count Harvey as one of their most ardent fans. Harvey had the pleasure of attending several home games in Miami in recent years, including a family trip with Marie and his daughters last month to cheer on his beloved Dolphins.
Many organizations benefited from Harvey’s time, canvassing efforts and generosity during his life. He volunteered with Halifax Meals on Wheels, Souls Harbour Rescue Mission, Canadian Diabetes Association, Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Ronald McDonald House and Nova Scotia Special Olympics.
Harvey was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church in Halifax, volunteered at the church in several capacities and served as an usher for a number of years.
Besides his father Edwin, Harvey is survived by his wife Marie (Taylor); daughters Kristin (Ross Wills) and Lauren (Greg Brown), all of Halifax; aunts, Marion Crowell, Halifax, Mid Saunders, Bridgewater; life-long friend and “brother,” Harry Fitzgerald; several nieces and nephews and extended family members.
Besides his mother, Jean, Harvey was predeceased by his namesake and paternal grandfather, Major (ret’d) Harvey Edwin Crowell, a decorated commanding officer who fought in the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917, and Mrs. Ella Crowell; maternal grandparents, Raymond and Dorothy White.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Friday Dec 9th in First Baptist Church, 1300 Oxford Street, Rev. Jenny Csinos officiating. Reception to follow at Ashburn Golf Club, Joseph Howe Drive. There is no visitation; funeral arrangements entrusted to J.A. Snow Funeral Home.
