It is with heavy hearts that we share the unexpected passing of Hugh Andrew Latimer on July 6, 2025. A devoted husband, loving father, and cherished friend, Hugh left a lasting mark on the lives of all who knew him.
Born in Truro, NS, on January 26, 1965, Hugh graduated from CEC in 1983. He attended Mount Allison University, graduating in 1987 as Class President with a Bachelor of Commerce and an Engineering Certificate. He earned his Chartered Accountant designation in 1990 while working with Ernst & Young in Toronto.
Influenced from a young age by his family’s construction business, Hugh was a natural entrepreneur, often drawn to the heavy equipment industry. His career began in sales with Volvo Construction Equipment in Toronto, followed by a role in Chambersburg, PA, with Champion Paving. While there, he met Melanie, and they were married in 1998 in Gettysburg.
After several years living and working in Toronto and Truro, Hugh and Melanie eventually settled in Bedford, NS, where they raised their family. Hugh continued to pursue a variety of entrepreneurial ventures related to construction.
Hugh is survived by his wife, Melanie Baumgardner (Bedford), and his children Rachel (Miami, FL), Grace (Miami, FL), and Hudson (Bedford). He was predeceased by his beloved son Noah on July 14, 2024. He is also survived by his parents, David and Elizabeth Latimer (Ft. Lauderdale, FL); his brother Kevin (Ingrid); sisters Carole Ann (Michael Mulder) and Margot (Michael Topshee); and aunts, cousins and many nieces and nephews who deeply loved their Uncle Hugh.
To his family and friends, Hugh was known for his big heart, tireless work ethic, generosity, and genuine connection with young people. More than anything, Hugh found his greatest joy in being a husband to Melanie and a father to Rachel, Noah, Grace, and Hudson. He had a lifelong love of sports—especially hockey—in all its forms: as a player, coach, and fan.
Though he experienced success and much joy in life, Hugh also quietly endured invisible burdens. Until his passing, he devotedly cared for Melanie through years of illness. In recent years the weight of his losses became overwhelming. His passing is a heartbreaking reminder of the need for compassionate mental health support for those who grieve.
Hugh will be remembered with love - for his dedication to family, his warmth, and the many lives he touched. His presence will be deeply missed and long cherished.
A family gathering will be held at a later date.
