Born in New Glasgow to the late George and Margaret MacDonald, she is survived by siblings, Anne (Clarence) Cameron, Antigonish, Don (Leona), Melmerby Beach, John (Pat), Bedford, Austin, Hammonds Plains, and sister-in-law, Mary (Gerry) Orangeville, ON, many nieces, nephews, and good friends. Predeceased by long time special friend, Don Warner; sister, Mabel; brother, Gerry. Isabel was the matriarch of the family, fondly taking care of her parents, aunts, siblings, nieces and nephews (supporting many of them through university). In her early days, as a teacher, she taught in rural schools, and then moved to Halifax, to teach in a number of inner city schools, her passion. She was a teacher of extended achievement services at St. Agnes School, then a senior staff member at the Halifax School Board in the position of Co-ordinator of Elementary Education. On her retirement the Halifax School Board named a site in her honour “Isabel MacDonald Professional Development Centre”. She firmly believed in challenging the gifted students, and was responsible for introducing enriched programs in the grade six/seven classes, as well as enhancing programs for the inner city schools.
Isabel was courageous and stylish, with a love of Jazz, cats, political discussions, good food, and most of all, family. Her heart of gold will never be forgotten by the many people she befriended. Special thanks to Heather Hayes, her close friend for many years, and to the staff at Drummond Hall and Evan Hall, especially Lynn Surette, for her kindness and caring.
