
James Smart died August 12, 2011 in the QEII Hospital after several years of care at Parkland Estates, Halifax. He was the last of his family having emigrated from Scotland after his father’s death in 1929 with his mother and 2 sisters to whom he was devoted, not marrying until 1987 to Beverly Tucker.
Jim was educated in Montreal becoming a chartered accountant and held a number of senior positions in industry across the country eventually joining the federal government in economic development. He participated actively in his communities having a wide range of interests including football, fishing, hunting, Boards of Trade, debating, Montreal City Council, Neptune Theatre, Camerata Singers, The Royal Commonwealth Society, The German Wine Tasting Society, and Saint David’s Church in Halifax. Having lived in Montreal, Toronto, Regina, Edmonton, Sydney, Moncton and Halifax, Jim had a large circle of friends and was a special father and grandfather to many including: Rob, Ken, Peter, and Nigel Field, Brent Tucker, Liam and Timothy Sullivan, Laura and Annie Tucker.
He was predeceased by his mother, Elsbeth (Carruthers) and his sisters Alison and Elsbeth. He will be missed by Beverly Tucker Smart and his acquired family: Kay (Gordon) Stanfield, Jane Tucker (Fred Matthews), Annette (Tom) Gillis, Bill (Sue) Tucker, Victoria (David) Sullivan, Jacqueline Tucker, Brent Tucker (Helen Tubrett), 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm, August 19 at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax and interment to be arranged later in Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal.
