

Born in Saint John, NB, she was the daughter of Daniel and Alice Tonning.
Joan was a long time member of RNSYC. Beloved active member of Alpha Gamma Delta Women’s Fraternity. Avid bridge player. Strong member of the Junior League of Halifax. Longtime member of the YMCA. In the last 10 years she enjoyed exercising at Ready to Rumba where she formed many friendships. She attended Dalhousie University obtaining her Bachelor of Education.
Survived by her daughters, Catherine Savoie (David) and Debbie Thompson (Mark); sisters, Ann Nason; four grandchildren, Melissa, Peter, Beth, Mikey, and many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
Predeceased by parents and her husband, Peter Stirling. Joan was full of life touched many people and will be greatly missed. Her laughter will live through all of us. The family would like to thank the staff at the QE II for their exceptional care of Joan. In lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Chapter of Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Visitation for Joan will be held on Sunday, December 3rd, 2017 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm and a Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, December 4th, 2017 at Saint John the Baptist Church, 26 Purcell's Cove Rd. at 11:00 am.
