After a long battle with Alzheimer’s, mom passed away peacefully with her girls by her side. We are beyond devastated that she is no longer with us but take comfort knowing that she is finally at peace with our father, her mom and her brothers and sisters. We were so lucky to have had her in our life and the wonderful memories we keep dear to our hearts
She was loved and cherished by not only her family but all who had the opportunity to know her. Her loving smile and warm heart welcomed you with open arms. Born in Chapel Arm, Trinity Bay, NF, Joan was the daughter of the late Mary Ann (nee Barry) Griffin.
At the age of 20, she traveled to Germany to marry her sweetheart, Michael. Their travels took them from Germany to New Brunswick to Newfoundland and finally to Nova Scotia where they settled in Timberlea.
She was active member of the community through both her work and volunteering. She retired from Dalhousie University in 2007 where she was loved and respected by many.
Her hobbies included, playing cards, darts, gardening, dancing and long talks with family and friends over several cups of tea.
She will be truly missed by her children, Craig, Patrick (Cheryl), Michelle (Tom Hunter), Mellissa (Wayde Hazelwood); and her 9 grandchildren, Alicia, Shane, Kaitlyn, Samantha, Justin, Myles, Matthew, Brittney, Autumn and 2 great grandchild, Gabby and Hunter. The loss of Joan has also deeply saddened her sister-in-law and best friend, Marie Griffin, many nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers in law and dear friends.
Preceded by her husband of 52 years, Michael; her mother; brothers, Vince, Leo, Mike, Cyril; sisters; Anne, Bette, and Sade.
A service will be held on Friday, May 6th at 2:00 pm at J.A. Snow’s Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia.
Special thanks to the staff at the Whitehill’s Long Term Care Centre
