It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that the daughters of John Edward Hutchison (Hutch) announce the passing of their exceptional, one-of-a-kind, loving Father. He passed away peacefully on Tues, Dec 21, 2021 at the QEII Health Sciences Center in Halifax, at the well-lived age of 85.
Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, to the late Alice Fisher, he was the second oldest of 5 siblings. Predeceased by his wife Nancy, siblings Stuart, Jean and Gerald, grandson Scott Hamilton, and great granddaughter Kylah-Leigh Rogers.
John made his way to Halifax, as a young teen, and started working delivering Telegraphs by bicycle for CN Telegraph Office in downtown Halifax and never looked back. He worked his way up through CN Telecommunications, while holding a part time job as a waiter at the then called Hotel Nova Scotian. John spent at least three decades with the hotel, eventually becoming a head waiter which often presented him with opportunities to meet and serve a number of celebrities, and the rare privilege and honor of serving “Her Majesty” Queen Elizabeth II along with the Queen Mother in 1976.
He moved on to a few other jobs throughout the years, including: Wilson Equipment Limited: Mills Heavy Hauling: and behind the bar as a bartender at the Flamingo Dining Room and Lounge on Bayers Rd.
In 1986 he started working at the Halifax waterfront and ended his working years retiring from Halterm Container Pier in 2004.
John was a people person. He loved to socialize and was well liked and respected by his multitude of friends and life-long friendships with people everywhere. There was always somebody somewhere that new “Hutch.”
Hutch was a competitor, and he was good at it, whether it was basketball, bowling, curling, darts, cribbage, shuffleboard, or out on the golf course, he loved at all.
John was a content and happy person, wise beyond his years, kind of a Brainiac if you will, and was rarely defeated in a game of Jeopardy or a Trivial Pursuit Battle.
An avid reader and crossword puzzle/crypto-quote man, Hutch loved his newspaper never missing a day to solve both daily puzzles and most often would complete the New York Times every Sunday right up till his last few months.
He also loved to travel and often could be found in Cuba, Mexico, the Dominican Republic or Jamaica every winter for several weeks.
He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered, by his three surviving daughters. Christine Johnson (Derek) of Head of St. Margaret’s Bay, Darlene Hamilton of Halifax and Paula Hutchison of Ottawa Ontario. Six grandchildren: BJ and Matthew Boudreau. Fort McMurray, Alberta. Jessica-Beth and Jennifer-Lee Hamilton. Halifax, Nova Scotia. Amanda Gosine, and Kurt Rogers. Ottawa, Ontario. Six great grandchildren: Braiden Boudreau. Fort McMurray, Alberta, Jordan Gosine, Mariah and Naveah St. Prix. Ottawa, Ontario and Ciara-Lynn Hamilton. Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Arrangements are in the care of JA Snow Funeral Home. In keeping with our Fathers wishes there will be no funeral service held. Cremation has taken place. For those who wish, donations in John's name may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in his memory. John's daughters would like to invite family and friends, to share thoughts, memories or photos at www.jasnowfuneralhome.com
