
Age 97, of Edward Arab Avenue, Halifax, N.S. passed away peacefully in the Veterans Memorial Building in Halifax on March 31, 2017. He was surrounded by his wife Anna and his loving children.
John was born in Halifax on November 24, 1919. He was the son of the late Russell Twinings and Mary (MacDonald) Ward. John was a devoted husband to Anna (MacCormick) and a devoted father to his 5 children. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Anna Mary Ward, and his 3 sons, Brian M. (Beverley McMullin) Ward, Dartmouth; J. Doug (Margo Bonnell) Ward, Bridgewater and Tom A. (Helen MacDonnell) Ward, Mahone Bay. John is also survived by his 2 daughters, Joanne E. (Gerard) Walsh, Halifax and Catherine A. Ward (Bentley Corkum) Halifax.
Bubba had 9 special grandchildren whom he was very proud of and they were always in his thoughts; Christopher, Andrea, Matthew, Gerard, John, George, Edward, Colin and Stephen. Great Bubba is survived by his 4 great grandchildren; Kaitlyn, Lexy, Ewan and Peyton. John is survived by his brother Donald Ward, Winnipeg, Manitoba. He will be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sisters; Shirley Tanner, and Marie Ward and two infant grandchildren, Elizabeth Anna and Brian Joseph.
Before his marriage he attended St. Mary’s College and was a proud member of the school hockey team. He served in the Air Force in Toronto and Moncton during WWII. After the war John took a position at the Halifax Naval Dockyard, in the Engineering Drafting Design Department. John and his wife, Anna bought their home in the Historic Westmount area and he knew and served with many of the men whose names appear on the streets in the neighborhood. John was one of the last original owners in the Westmount area.
He was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the Brightwood Golf Club in Dartmouth. Many lasting friendships were fostered through the club. John was a member of St. Agnes Parish for over 65 years. He served as a member of the Parish Council. He was a former lector, choir member, and helped in organizing the many church fairs. He was a charter member of the St. Agnes Bowling League which he helped to organize. He also enjoyed skating well into his 85th year with the Seniors Silver Blades Skating Club. John loved the game of hockey and was an avid follower of the sport.

Cremation has been arranged by J.A. Snow Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Agnes Church, 6903 Mumford Rd. Halifax on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 10:00 am. Father Paul Morris will be officiating. At a later date a private interment will be held at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Sackville, NS. After the service the family will be gathering with relatives and friends in the St. Agnes Church Hall. Family flowers only.
