Joseph Aldred 'Al' Walker

Joseph Aldred (Al) Walker passed away peacefully at home on November 12, 2014 at the age of 77. Al was born in New York City on December 12, 1936, son of Joseph Angelo Rodriquez and Annie Delrosa Walker. Al was raised by his Mother's parents, Alpin Edwin Walker and Mary Ellen (Nellie) Walker nee Power in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Baptized at St. Joseph Church January 12, 1937. Educated at Alexander Mckay School. Later in life he attended Sackville High School, obtained his GED in order to advance his career. Al was proud to serve the City of Halifax for 32 years as a fire fighter and retired at the rank of Captain. Always wanting to provide the best he could for his family, Al worked part time at garden centers, building rental and management companies throughout his life. Subsequently at Sears and as a tour guide after retiring from the Fire Service. Al's enthusiasm for trains and miniature railroads led to him volunteering his time at the IWK, he enjoyed gardening and built 2 homes for his family. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marie Theresa Walker nee Flinn, daughters, Kathleen Marie Walker, Cheryl Lynn Walker and his son Daniel Joseph Walker. Al has joined his other siblings, Alpin Edwin Walker, Beatrice Marie Baker and Franklyn Delano Rodriquez. His sole surviving sibling Blair Dominic Rodriquez resides in Florida. Al was a proud grandparent to 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Al was an avid curling fan enjoyed dog shows and his faithful companions over the years. Other accomplishments and contributions included, Secretary to local 268 IAFF, President of the Sackville Minor Hockey Association, President of the Sackville Skating Club and 30 plus long service award with the City of Halifax. Visitation in Al's memory will be held Sunday November 16, 2014 at Snow's funeral home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, NS from 6:00-8:00PM. His funeral to be held at the same location Monday, November 17, 2014 at 4:00PM. In lieu of flowers please make any donations to the Muscular Dystrophy Association in Al's name.
