It is with great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Judith “Judy” Carruthers Terrio, age 69, of Truro/Halifax on October 15, 2016, at the Victoria General Hospital. Born in Truro, Judy was the daughter of the late Earl and Ruby (Carruthers) Totten.
Judy’s family was the love of her life and brought her tremendous happiness. Judy always put others ahead of herself and had the highest expectations of those closest to her. She was extremely generous and had a sincere interest in listening to and connecting with people. She will always be remembered for her “20 questions”.
Judy was raised in Truro, NS, before heading to Acadia University where she graduated with a BA and BEd in 1969. It was during this time that Judy met her husband Fred and formed many close friendships that continue today. She then moved to Halifax where she began her teaching career as an elementary school teacher with the Halifax District School Board. After taking time off to raise her young children, she returned to her passion of teaching and soon settled into her role as an adult ESL teacher – a position she held for over 20 years and considered the most rewarding of her career.
From a young age, Judy loved spending time on the North Shore near Tatamagouche, especially at the cottage. Her favorite times were spent walking the beach looking for beach glass, swimming, reading, happy hours on the deck, and watching the boats sail by.
Judy was a true animal lover and will be missed by her beloved Chester.
She was also a relentless shopper who loved searching for the perfect outfit or gift.
Judy fought a brave and courageous battle over the past twelve years. Her determination to live and enjoy life was exceptional. She was so happy to have been able to experience the birth and early years of her four cherished grandchildren.
Special thanks are extended to Dr. Daniel Rayson, with whom Judy developed a special relationship over the past 12 years. Also, Dr. Morris Trager, who not only supported Judy as her doctor, but also as a close family friend. Additional thanks go to the caring staff at both the VG and homecare services.
Survived by her husband Fred Terrio; daughter Jodie Terrio (Matt Grant); son David (Vicky) Terrio; sister Susan Totten; brother Vernon (Lynn) Totten; grandchildren Sam, Vivian, Ben and Piper, and her dearest friends the Edwards, who she considered family. Predeceased by her parents, Earl and Ruby. Funeral service and reception to take place at the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection on Saturday, October 22 at 11am. Rev. Dr. Kimber McNabb officiating. Private family burial at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA, the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
Judy will be forever loved by her family, friends and all who knew her.
