EVONG, Kenneth Francis of Halifax, Nova Scotia passed away on March 10, 2023 after living a full and interesting life of 87 years. With his beloved wife Marilyn by his side, surrounded by his loving family in touch and in spirit, he drew his last breath.
Ken was born in October of 1936, the youngest of three sons of Martin and Loretta (Power) in Halifax. Ken grew up working alongside his father, uncles and brothers running crews on the Halifax Dockyard. At the grain elevators the work was hard and survival of the fittest was determined by a band of brothers; young and old, on the job and in the streets. We heard the stories, all told with pride and we listened with admiration of the strength which kept them together. If you were a friend of the Evong boys, you knew you’d have a good time and that they’d have your back.
Anyone who knew Ken knew he was the most loving father and husband a family could ask for. A man who thoroughly enjoyed his friends and family all of whom can recall how genuinely delighted he was each time he saw them.
Ken was predeceased by his father Martin, mother Loretta and brothers Finley Ross and Martin Jr.
Ken is survived by his loving wife Marilyn (McNeil), his children; son Gary of Halifax, and daughters Michelle (Michel Tessier) of Halifax, Denise (Geoff Hurshman) of Upper Tantallon, and Paula (Wendell Young) of Chicago, Illinois.
Ken met his wonderful wife Marilyn in Halifax. Marilyn was studying to become an RN and found her way to Ken’s heart on the dance floor – a passion they both shared and were incredible to watch. Nothing but rhythm, style and all smiles. They married in 1957 and started their life together in Halifax anxious to start a family. Marilyn began her career as a nurse while Ken honed his skills in sales coupled with an entrepreneurial spirit. They did their best, made many sacrifices, and they succeeded. Ken and his loving wife raised wonderful children that brought Ken his pride and joy, his grandchildren; Alex, Genevieve, Mercedes, Justin, Lily, Sacha, Gabrielle, Matthew, Jack, Emma, Isaac and a great granddaughter who is almost here but loved just as much.
Ken was a man who loved family and loved life, and nothing made him feel as good as having his loved ones around him.
A visitation will be held on Thursday March 30th from 2-4pm and a memorial service will take place on Saturday April 1st at 10am, all at J A Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax.
