It is with heavy hearts that the family of Laura Mae Spence (Shearer) announces her sudden passing at the age of 92 on May 11th, 2013 at Parkstone Enhanced Care in Halifax. Born in Lower Onslow, Colchester County, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Elizabeth (MacDonald) Shearer.
She served as a member of the Canadian Army during World War II and was stationed in Montreal as a Dental Assistant. She was also employed for many years at Lawton’s Drugs in Halifax where she enjoyed putting a smile on each customer’s face until her retirement in 1991. Laura spent many happy summers at Brule Beach where she enjoyed sing-a-longs and dances with friends. She also enjoyed knitting, making apple jelly, playing pool and was always willing to lend a helping hand. She always made time to read to her grandchildren and make every holiday special.
Laura was a long term resident of Kearney Lake and spent the last three years of her life at Parkstone Enhanced Care where she continued to socialize and dance a little jig. She is survived by daughter Shelly (Jerry) MacDonald, Halifax, three granddaughters Amanda, Ashley and Alyssa, and a great granddaughter Kyla. She is predeceased by her son Ralph Stevens, brothers Henry, Alexander and Wilfred Shearer and sisters Bertha Mayne, Margaret McCallum, Gertrude Richards and Florence Morrow. Visitation at J.A. Snows Funeral Home on Wednesday May 15th from 6-8pm, funeral services will be held Thursday, May 16, at 2:00 pm at Snows Memorial Chapel and burial at a later date in Belmont Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada. We would like to thank Sullivan’s Lane nurses and staff for all their care, kindness and compassion.
