Margaret, Mary Longaphy, 95 – passed away on March 2 at Northwood Centre, Halifax. Born on February 19, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Obilene and Joseph Penney of Sydney. Margaret was a most cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother. Her life revolved around her husband and her children. Her love knew no limits. A founding member of St. Stephen Parish in North-end Halifax, she was an ardent and enthusiastic member of the Catholic Church. She lived for others and always inspired family and friends with her love and generosity. She lived for the message of the Gospel and preferred to discover the good she knew dwelt in everyone. If Margaret considered you a friend, you were blessed indeed. Before strangers knew her name, they knew her smile. Margaret is survived by children Robert (Shirley), Ann (Rick) Morris, Joan (Derek) Watson, Fred and John. Sadly, she outlived a son James and daughter Margaret Wheten. She was also predeceased by husband Fred. Nanny was blessed with 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Margaret is also survived by her sisters Jenny Gammon, Kay Libby and Helen MacDonald. She was predeceased by brothers Leo, Tom and Vince and sister Martha.
An extraordinarily large thank you must be extended to the staff of 2Centre, Northwood for their exceptional care. Only the family knows how truly grateful we are for your loving compassion at a very difficult time for Mom. Feisty to the end, you saw her wonderful sense of humour and absolute unselfishness even when her body was turning against her.
A loving grandaughter, Cathy said it best to her Nanny on the very day she died:
My cherished Nanny – As Mother Teresa says, “Intense love does not measure, it just gives.” When I think of intense love, I always think of you. I think of the unconditional love you always give your family. All memories of you are peaceful, happy, funny. I always feel like I am the most special person in your life when I enter the room and you make each and every person feel that way. When I lose patience, or I think of myself, I am reminded of how you would act and it always makes me reflect on how I can be a better person. You have helped make me who I am today.
Visitation 2-4, 7-9pm, Tuesday, March 5 in JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, March 6 at 10 am in Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta Parish (St. Stephen Church) Robie St. Halifax with Fr. Gerald David officiating. Interment to follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hope Cottage or a similar charity. Give someone a smile today in memory of mom.
