Born April 3, 1912 in Lunenburg Nova Scotia she was the daughter of Maude Emily (Kinley) Thurlow and Charles William Thurlow.
She attended Lunenburg Academy and was a member of Central United Church.
Margaret came to Halifax at the age of 16 and worked at the Maritime Telephone and Telegraph Company before marriage to her first husband William Kendall Fay.
Margaret is survived by her son William Burbeck Fay, (Fay), stepdaughter Nancy(Morash) Tingley (David), stepson John A. Morash, grandchildren William Kendall Fay, and Dale Kevin Fay, and 6 stepgrand children.
She was predeceased by baby son Ronald Kendall Fay, daughter Susan Margaret Fay, her first husband William Kendall Fay of 32 years, and her second husband John James Bertram Morash of 28 years, sisters Florence, Mildred, Evelyn, brothers Charles, Lionel, and Arthur.
Margaret and her brother Arthur were one of the oldest pair of living siblings in Canada at 108 and 107, if not the oldest before their deaths in 2020.
Margaret was a Charter Member of the Marion S. Morrow Chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of The Empire. (I.O.D.E). She became a member of the Anglican Church of Canada upon her first marriage.
Margaret loved her bridge games, was a master at crossword puzzles and the game of SCRABBLE, to which her stepdaughter Nancy will attest.
Margaret was an accomplished artist as well. Both she and Nancy partnered on more than a few art class excursions around Nova Scotia over the years.
She survived ovarian cancer in her 80’s and broke her hip on two separate occasions. Margaret overcame all these misfortunes and was still able to get around with her walker. Her keen wit and sense of humour were evident in her everyday life and she will be sorely missed. She was not one to complain.
In the last 4 months we were only able to visit her twice due to Covid 19 restrictions. No visitors were allowed inside Parkstone. They brought Margaret outside to a meeting place set up on the lawn. Social distancing was still in effect. She looked great and was in good spirits on that last sunny midday visit in July. Margaret talked and laughed with her son Bill, and her stepdaughter Nancy. It left us both with magical memories of those last two visits.
It was only 6 days later that the sands of time ran out for Margaret. Her heritage and genes of longevity will continue to fuel the folklore surrounding the tale that Lunenburg Natives live lengthy lives.
Margaret was a remarkable woman, a good friend, and best of all… My Mother for 81 years.
Special thanks to the Palliative care team and the staff at Parkstone. They treated Margaret with love and respect, it was a place where she felt safe and secure, with the feeling of a real home atmosphere. And they all liked her as well.
Special thanks to her stepdaughter Nancy for the friendship, companionship, and for all the work and care you gave her. All those trips from Cole Harbour to Parkland and Parkstone over the years, seeing to all her needs, going out for meals, visits to the hospital when accidents befell her. You were a guardian angel in person.
Cremation has taken place. No reception or flowers. Burial will be scheduled at a later date, during a graveside ceremony for family members at Christ Church Cemetery in Dartmouth, N.S.
