It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maria (Panagiotakos) Georgakakos who passed away peacefully at home on Dec. 29, 2020. She was 86 years old. Maria was born in Gytheio, Lakonia, Greece on June 2, 1934 to Dimosthenis and Penelope Panagiotakos. She immigrated to Halifax in 1958, married Gus Georgakakos and in 1961 she, along with her husband, Gus, established what would become a Halifax landmark, Gus’ Pub & Grill. Maria was always a people person and welcomed people from all walks of life into her establishment with open arms. She always had a smile on her face and made everyone feel at home. She referred to Gus’ Pub as her “fourth child” and to her patrons, she was ‘Mama’. She loved to spend time with her extended family and was known to tell excellent and funny stories. She was a great swimmer and took it upon herself to teach all the kids in the family how to swim during her visits to Greece. Maria was a member of the Greek woman’s society, Philoptochos and enjoyed going to church and being part of the community, always giving back any chance she could.
Maria is survived by her daughter, Lillian (Nikos Petakos) Georgakakos and son Dimo (Lisa Reid) Georgakakos. Her brothers: Peter (Nancy), Terry (Maria), Andy, and Louie (Angelica). Grandchildren: Georgia, Kosta, Demo, Spiros, Maria, Stavros, Kosta. She had many wonderful nieces and nephews.
