I remember sharing conversation over the loud din of Gus’ with a coffee to warm me. Maria was always the big sister I longed to have. 
I miss Maria but remember our many times together. What a lady!  She was an amazing person with her life balance of managing a business, loving her family and making it all seem easy. It wasn’t easy but this powerhouse lady was a great role model to me and many more. 
RIP until we meet again.

Our thoughts & Prayers are with the Family of Maria, she is now at home with Gus. Maria was such a special lady, whom was well loved & respected, My husband Howie Sheppard & myself met Maria in 1973,when both her & her late husband attended our wedding. Such a thoughtful & sweet lady & will be dearly missed. She was great friends with my cousin Marie Roop & the two of them always told such funny stories .I am sure Heaven has opened its doors to such a special lady. Hugs sent to Heaven.

I remember many wonderful chats with Maria as I paused from selling roses. I looked forward to her smiles and feeling a sense of family during these visits. I was invited to her home in Kearney Lake for a baby shower. I was privileged to be so close to this lady. 
Maria was the constant in her business. It was a place that I noted had little in the way of disturbances, fighting or such. I believe Maria had a calm that kept the order. She would take a walk in her small space and return. Nodding and greeting her regular patrons. The “neighbourhood feeling” was what I always called the atmosphere in Gus’. I often heard patrons call Maria, “Mama”. I will always reflect back on my memories of her beautiful smile. Although some time had passed since I’d seen Maria, her memory is stamped indelibly in my heart. I’ll see you on the other side; I know your with my mother keeping her company now.

It’s rare to meet a person as caring and giving as your mother, and I want to tell you how sorry I am to learn of her passing. I’m certain I’m not alone in saying that she made so many of us feel as if we were part of her family, and knowing how she held family above all else, it was such an honour.  Seeing Maria was knowing there would be not only laughs, but that the pride she held for her family would shine, and with it the reassurance that comes with the inherent optimism of a person who never has to say what matters most. It was a privilege to have known her at all, and please accept my condolences on your loss. Her ‘fourth child’ may remain part of the bedrock of the north end, but its soul is and always has been Maria. 

To  Maria's family: My deepest sympathies. Maria was one special woman. I lived for many years on McCully Street and was a regular at Gus's. Maria was always charming, friendly, and up for a chat. And I have to add that she was pretty darn good at keeping the rowdies in line! We have lost a bit of Halifax's soul. Sincere best wishes to the Georgakakos family.

Dear Lillian, Demo and all of Maria's family,

You will miss her very much I am sure.  She was so friendly.  I met her at Physio in 2009.   I certainly heard her name long before she introduced herself to me.  She spoke to me of her children including godchildren.  

I did see her at Gus' one time when I was waiting for my grand nephew (BLESSED) to arrive there.  To be honest I forget what she was raising funds for that evening.   She came to say goodnight to me and laughed saying she would wait with me if it was her family who was coming from the west!

Thank you for sharing her love with so many others.

I’m writing this with a heavy heart ❤️ 😞.  I was thinking of Maria, and was going to call her before I saw this today, which reminds me, not to put off what’s in your heart ❤️.  Maria had such a beautiful laugh and big heart.  I remember one Spring day, it was Easter Day, and I was by myself, going for a walk, and passed by Gus’s, when I saw Maria at the door, and she asked what was I doing, all by myself on Easter 🐣?  She invited me in with her family to have a meal...it was the best pasta I ever had, served to her family with LOVE ❤️.  I will never forget that day, and so many other memories....

I was Maria's room mate in the hospital, I met her son, when he tried to help with a rowdy patient. She was such a kind woman. She talked alot about her family and working as a girl in a store and later in the pub. I did not know her long but long enough to know she was a kind and caring lady. May she Rest in Peace. 

Loved seeing her face when her family brought her for breakfast at the restaurant I worked at. She was so sweet, I felt like I had my own  grandmother there for a little while. Maria will be missed. Condolences to the family, you're in my prayers.

I've known Maria since before I was born. 
57 years. My mother and grandmother used to go to Gus' when my mom was pregnant with me. 
I had the pleasure to work with Maria at Gus' in the kitchen she would say two beautiful woman making beautiful food. She loved being in her kitchen, her employees and her family. 
I'll always cherish the memories I had with her.
