It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Mother, Marie B MacDonald RN (nee Hoare) on February 4, 2015 at Parkstone Enhanced Care, Mount Lane. Born on July 5, 1930 in Halifax she was the daughter of the late Margaret and Alexander Hoare.
Marie was a proud graduate of the Halifax Infirmary School of Nursing, Class of '51. She began her career as a staff nurse at the Halifax Infirmary, in the nursery and eventually became the head nurse on 3C, a busy surgical unit. Her warm and beautiful smile and her keen sense of humour made working with her a memorable experience. She loved to travel and enjoyed her Bahamian adventures with her best girl-friend. When she remarried in 1977 she moved to Glenburnie, Ontario and worked as a staff nurse in Kingston's maximum security Prison for Women. Her empathy for the inmates was always apparent in her discrete stories. After retirement she and her late husband travelled across the USA and Canada in their Fifth Wheel accompanied by their grand-daughter Erin who enjoyed their overwhelming love and attention. Several years later she was blessed with two more grandchildren.
In Marie's later years her daughter-in-law Janet became a guardian angel and bonded with Mum in a very special way, always seeking to ensure she was comfortable and able to enjoy a laugh.
We knew love growing up as her children and we were always the centre of her life. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Charmaine McDonald , son, Wayne McDonald and daughter-in-law, Janet.; stepson David MacDonald; 3 grandchildren, Erin, Jocelyne and Rachelle; 2 step-grandchildren Brandon and Zachery.
She is also survived by her sister, Sister Margaret Hoare who lived along side her in her final days on Mount Lance at Parkstone Enhanced Care and a niece Kathleen and nephew Michael.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, husband of 32 years, Frederick Allan MacDonald, and her oldest sister, Florence Soares.
Visitation will be at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive 902-455-0531 on Thursday, February 12 , from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. A funeral mass will be held at Saint Benedict's Church, 45 Radcliff Drive, on Friday, Feb 13 at 10:30 am; reception to follow the mass. Burial will be a private family event.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Society, Heart & Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice.
Special thanks to her life long friends and colleagues who stayed the course of life with her through the ups and downs and were there during her years of failing health. Special thanks as well to the caring staff at Parkland Assisted Living, Evan Hall and Parkstone Enhanced Care on Mount Lane who always displayed unconditional love and caring.
