Born in the historic town of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, on June 15, 1942, Marilyn’s early years were shaped by the charm of coastal life and a deep love for both art and horses — passions that stayed with her throughout her life. She graduated from Lunenburg Academy in 1960 and went on to earn her Bachelor of Education from Acadia University in 1963.
Marilyn began her teaching career with a strong love of language, sharing that passion through her early work as a Latin teacher. Over the years, she continued to inspire students with her gentle presence, creative mind, and unwavering belief in the power of education. In the final years of her career, she devoted herself to adult education, where she found great joy in helping others rediscover the wonder of learning.
After retiring, Marilyn returned to school to pursue her lifelong passion, enrolling at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD), where she proudly worked towards earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts. Marilyn loved expressing herself through her art and found great joy in exploring new techniques and creative forms. Her work reflected her thoughtful spirit and her endless curiosity.
A lifelong animal lover, Marilyn held a deep affection for all creatures — especially horses and rabbits. Gentle and nurturing, she found comfort and companionship in the presence of animals, and her kindness extended to every living thing.
Marilyn was predeceased by her beloved parents, Leon and Emma Lohnes (née Buckmaster), and her brother, David Morton Lohnes.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Maja Orlic (Ross) and Marija Orlic-Tanswell (Jimmy), and by her beloved grandchildren: Aidan, Iain, Sara, Kevin, and Kristin. Her legacy lives on in each of them — in their creativity, compassion, and appreciation for life’s quiet joys.
Marilyn’s life was marked by grace, resilience, and endless curiosity. She believed that learning never stopped, beauty was everywhere, and kindness mattered most.
A celebration of Marilyn’s life will be held on August 23rd at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Anglican Church in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. All who knew and loved her are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marilyn’s honour to the Nova Scotia SPCA, an organization close to her heart.
