Marilyn Gladys Mullin, age 84, of Halifax, NS, passed away on October 13th, 2025, Thanksgiving Monday, while on a train trip to visit family and friends. Known for her energetic spirit and showing no signs of slowing down, we were all shocked to hear of an unexpected cardiac event upon arrival in Montreal.
She was predeceased by her parents, George Christopher Read and Gladys Read (nee Little). She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Wilbur (Bill) Mullin, and her brothers Kenneth Read (late Hazel) and Weldon Read (Stella). She is survived by her beloved children Richard (Kathy), Anita Opalka (Greg), and Stephen (Caryl). Our sweet Nanny was a wonderful grandmother to Christina Wheeler (Peter), Natalie Mansvelt (Daniel), Julia Davis (Parker), Mikki Opalka, Camryn Mullin, Avery Opalka, and Riley Mullin. She was an adored Great-Nan to Rose, Abram, Malcolm, Isla, Graham, and Brooke.
Born and raised in North End Halifax, Marilyn's childhood home still stands at the corner of Lady Hammond Road and Robie Street - she still had girlfriends from her schoolgirl days at Richmond School who will miss her dearly. She was well-known around Halifax for her warm and enthusiastic personality, often making connections with strangers that would lead to years-long friendships.
Anyone who met her knew one thing: she was proud of her family. Marilyn's love for her family was boundless. She raised three children who all went on to create families of their own, and she joyfully cared for her grandchildren, always saying that her happiest days were minding the little ones. Up until her passing, she regularly babysat her young great-grandchildren. She gave generously of her time, energy, and love to all of her family. She made each of us know how truly proud she was of our accomplishments.
Celebration was an art that Marilyn excelled in. She celebrated the beauty around her through photography, with comprehensive albums diligently organized from the 1960s to the present. She celebrated music, having cultivated a highly musical family, and taking great joy in capturing family members' choir and band performances. She was most in her element when singing Christmas carols with her whole family gathered around the piano (a joy we shall continue for years to come in her honour). Marilyn left a legacy of love, which we can all honour through celebrating each other. She will be so missed.
There will be a celebration of Marilyn's life on November 8th at 2pm at Birch Cove Baptist Church at 50 Donaldson Ave. In lieu of flowers, consider donating to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or another charity of your choice.
