Born on February 22, 1953, in Windsor, Newfoundland, Marion’s early years were shaped by resilience and family bonds. At the age of eight, a fire tragically destroyed the family home, prompting the family to relocate from central Newfoundland to Birchy Cove, a small community near Bonavista. It was in Birchy Cove that Marion grew up, where she discovered her love of the ocean.
In 1971, Marion married her husband, Lewis Harris, and moved to Bonavista, where they built a life together. Surrounded by a large extended family, Marion and Lewis raised their two children, Violet and Lewis Jr., in a home a stone's throw from the ocean.
Marion worked at various jobs throughout her life, always dedicated to doing her best and earning the respect of her coworkers. She spent nearly 20 years in retail and concluded her career with 16 years of service for the Federal Government. In each role, Marion brought diligence, kindness, and her signature wit, leaving an impression on colleagues and friends alike.
Marion will be remembered as a wife, a loving mother, and a proud grandmother. Her unwavering kindness, sense of humor, and dedication to her family left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She had a unique ability to bring people together and create a sense of belonging, whether through gatherings, her close-knit circle of friends, or her connections in the community.
In her free time, Marion cherished moments spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, Kendra Hayward, Klaire Hayward, and Jackson Tomlin, who brought her immense joy and pride. Marion also loved to sew, read and travel.
Marion had a deep sense of hope and was looking forward to her retirement, which she planned to spend volunteering with her friends as part of her faith. She found purpose in sharing her beliefs about a better future and held strongly to her faith throughout her life, finding comfort and peace in its teachings.
Marion is survived by her husband of 53 years, Lewis Harris, her daughter, Violet Harris-Tomlin (Jeff), her son Lewis Harris Jr., her grandchildren, her surviving brothers, Donald White, Carl White (Darlene), and sisters Melvina White, Marilyn Ryan (Reg), Patsy Linthorne, Louise Stead (Paul), and Rowena Tremblett (Cyril). She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and a wealth of cherished friends who were like family to her. Marion was predeceased by her parents, Leo and Louise White, her brothers Joseph, Henry, Clyde, Wilson, and her sister Bessie Little.
A celebration of life to honor Marion’s memory will be held on Thursday, 30 January 2025 at 2PM at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses at 210 Parkland Drive, Halifax, NS.
Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in the countless cherished memories Marion gave us. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered as a pillar of love, strength, and warmth in our lives.
