Born in Halifax, he was the son of Florence Lucy MacFarlane and the late Allen Roland MacFarlane.
After an enjoyable 30 year career at Bell Aliant Mark settled into retirement in June of 2018. His greatest joy was of course his family. He spent countless hours at the rink, in his shorts, while Ian and Eric progressed through their hockey years. In the post-hockey years Mark was very interested in the pursuits of Ian and Eric and always engaged and supported them in their endeavours. Mark was a member of the MBS club in Timberlea for over 30 years where he spent his Thursday evenings enjoying the company of fellow members and for the past several years as their bartender. He has seen many a friend come and go from that club. He will be missed there. Mark spent many years playing baseball and golf and showed everyone that you can actually enjoy playing sports with next to no talent. His teammates and members of his golf foursomes truly enjoyed their time batting the ball around with him. Married for almost 30 years to his true love, Edwina, they enjoyed so much time together. That time was always with friends and family. If Mark had a passion other than family and friends it would be his love of the sun and the sand. With too many locations to count, their adventures took them to places like Antigua, Florida, Cuba, Dominican, Mexico, Jamaica and countless trips to Hubbard’s Beach and other local hot spots. He always proudly sported what looked like a tan for 12 months a year. Rest assured he is sitting in a lounge chair at the beach right now, with a few empty loungers waiting beside him, gazing upon us with a smile and the satisfaction that he lived a very full life for the amount of years he was here. He will be sadly missed by so many.
Mark is survived by his wife Edwina (Robinson) Marie MacFarlane, sons, Ian Richard MacFarlane and Eric Allen MacFarlane, brothers, Paul (Cheryl) MacFarlane, Peter (Suzanne) MacFarlane, Andy (Charlene) MacFarlane, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Allen Roland MacFarlane
There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Liver Foundation in Mark’s memory. There will be a memorial service held at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Timberlea, NS and will be officiated by Rev. Mark Pretty. Regrettably, due to Covid 19 restrictions, attendance will be by invitation only. It will be very difficult to prepare a list so small to honour a person that left an indelible mark on so many.
