Died peacefully in QEII Health Sciences Centre on August 22, 2017 attended by family and friends. Born June 3, 1934 in Halifax to Elizabeth and Charles Lamb, Mary volunteered actively, helping young and old - whether as Akela of the Cub Pack at Canadian Martyrs, or at Meals on Wheels. A proud Dalhousie grad, Mary joined Trans-Canada Airlines in the early days of air travel. During one of Halifax's epic winter storms, Mary slogged pre-dawn across the city through deep drifts and pelting snow, with her great friend and colleague Joan Morrison beside her, opening the TCA office before 6 a.m. to phone every flyer about cancellations. Mary retired from Air Canada in 1991 after 36 years, having been honoured with the Excellence Award. In retirement, Mary's intrepid walking helped her keep up with her new husband, the avid golfer George Henry Emerson (Lt. Cdr. RCN), a widower. Mary and George were seen often on Ashburn greens or Florida courses and enjoyed many happy years traveling and volunteering together. Predeceased by husband, George, and by sister,
Elizabeth (Sandbach), Mary will be remembered by friends for her boisterous laughter, compassion and generosity, especially by her niece, Tracy Roughley (Chris) and grand nephew, Zachary (Brampton), as well as by the children of George and Anna Emerson: Julie Emerson, Halifax; George Emerson (Charmain), Toronto; as well as Eileen Murphy (Stephen), Halifax, who dedicated herself to Mary's care after George's death. The family thanks Audrey Siddall, Mary's personal attendant who became a close friend when her health declined precipitously after being run down by a careless driver as Mary was leaving Ash Wednesday Mass in 2012. Funeral Mass is Monday, August 28 at 10:30 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church, Purcell's Cove Road. Donations welcomed by Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, the SPCA or a charity of choice.
