Maureen was the daughter of William and Antoinette (LeBlanc) Frawley. She was born and raised in Halifax and attended St. Patrick’s Girls High School and later graduated from secretarial school. The war and post war years were vivid in her memory and she told stories of a vibrant downtown and waterfront, warships in the harbour, formal naval dances and the V.E. Day riots. The past came to life in the imaginations of her nieces and nephews through her stories. During the busy Cold War years, she worked at the Royal Naval Dockyard at CFB Halifax. She was predeceased by her husband Harold Kitchener Attwood (d.2012). She met him at the Jubilee Boat Club. Harold was a bright, focused engineer who grew up in Botwood, Newfoundland. During their early years they spent time in Saint John, St. John’s and Toronto, settling in Fleming Heights area of Halifax. Maureen loved parties, music, dancing, entertaining, food, and the Fifties, it was her favorite decade and she promoted it every chance she got. She made a mean boiled raisin cake and enjoyed children and dogs, including her beloved (and cranky) Poochie. She and Harold enjoyed travelling, including epic bus tours of Europe but they returned often to their favorite places: their trailer at Marco Polo Land in Cavendish, PEI and a guest house in Hamilton, Bermuda. Maureen had a razor sharp memory, and until a few years ago, read two newspapers daily front to back. She spent her last, difficult years, as she wished, in her home, and lived for visits from loyal friends and family. Special thanks to Jackie Attwood Cody who offered care and help the past few years. Maureen is survived by her sister, Carole (Frawley) Kirk of Dartmouth, and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held in J.A. Snow Funeral Home Saturday, January 18th from 2 – 4pm at JA Snow Funeral Home, Halifax. No flowers please. Donations may be made to Parker Street Food Bank or a charity of choice.
