Passed away on Monday, October 9th, at the Camp Hill Veterans Hospital in Halifax.
Born in Miami, Florida in July, 1926 to Maurice Crosby and Anne (Ethel Ray) Potter, Maurice came to Canada as a young adult after serving in the US Navy and Coast Guard and became a member of the Canadian Merchant Navy.
As a young photographer, Maurice worked for the Chronicle Herald, covering events throughout the province. Later in his career, he worked for the Department of Tourism as Nova Scotia's Photographic Ambassador, capturing unique moments in time. His photographs of the legendary Bluenose schooner, Peggy’s Cove and other East Coast settings are featured in galleries, boardrooms and personal residences throughout the world. Over 35,000 of his photographs, depicting Nova Scotia's diverse history, are being held by the Province's Archives. A testament to his ability to capture Nova Scotia’s milestones, significant events and picturesque landscapes was reflected in the professionally produced documentary of his life, recently featured at both the Halifax and Charlottetown Film Festivals.
Maurice expanded his photography skills into numerous local business ventures over the years, including Maurice Crosby Photography, MacAskill-Crosby Gallery, The Key House, The Camera Shop, Village Photo and Nova Scotia Images.
