

It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Melville “Mel” Wallace McLeod, announce the passing of our Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather, on October 17, 2024. Mel passed away peacefully at Camp Hill Veterans Memorial building, at the age of 99, with family and close friends by his side.
Mel was born on December 23, 1924 in Selkirk, Manitoba. He joined the Navy and moved to Halifax during the war. He was a Veteran of the Second World War. He met the love of his life, Barbara “Barb” (predeceased) at Knights of Columbus Dance Place, in Halifax, and they were married for 65 years. He missed her dearly.
Mel was also predeceased by his parents, Wallace and Tassie (Mowat), brothers: Leslie, Hartley and James, and sisters: Pearl and Alma.
Mel was the cherished father of his only child, Darren and beloved Grandfather of Jocelyn. He will be lovingly remembered by his Great Grandchildren, Jacob and Jonathan. Mel is survived by his Brother Winston and Sisters Myrna and Linda, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mel was a cofounder of the Halifax Stroke Club and was President for a time. At Camp Hill Veterans Memorial, Mel was a member of the Veterans council and was on the food committee. Mel was active at Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building and befriended many people and participated in many social activities. Mel was a sports fan and enjoyed watching the MLB (Toronto Blue Jays) and the CFL (Winnipeg Blue Boomers).
Mel was a kind and loving man. He always looked at the positives in life and had a smile and laugh that brightened the room. He was witty, funny and easy to talk to. Mel got along with everyone he met. His nickname of “Mr. Wonderful” truly suited him. He will be so fondly remembered and loved by so many.
Special thanks to the Nurses and staff at Camp Hill Veterans Memorial building, especially those on floor 5 West, for their excellent care and compassion. Mel always felt he was treated so very well. Special mention to Sandra, Jayson and Rachel LaFort (nurse and friend). Also special thanks to family and friends who visited Mel often, making sure he had everything he needed, helping to brighten his day and making him laugh. Mel will be missed by: sister-in-law, Peggy (Neil) Roberts, Alan (Nancy) Knight, Gary Arnott, sister-in-law, Jackie Innes, sister-in-law, Lillian (Don) Flemming, David (Mary) Reid, and Dennis (Marlene) May, and so many others.
A celebration of Mel’s life will be held at JA Snow’s Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, on Sunday October 27th at 2:00pm. Thank you to Reverend Katie Taylor-Flynn from St. James Anglican Church for conducting the service.
