Myrta moved to Glace Bay in 1951 to enter the General Hospital School of Nursing. While training at “The General” she met the love of her life Bill. Myrta graduated as a registered nurse in the spring of 1953 and was married on August 6th of that same year. She worked as a private duty nurse for a short period and then stepped back from nursing to raise her family. Throughout her life she continued to provide nursing care to family, friends and neighbours. She was called to handle everything from cuts and bruises to CPR and was a calm, reassuring presence in every emergency. When her children had grown Myrta returned to nursing, providing care to special needs students at Bridgeport Elementary School for almost 20 years.
In her life she loved Bill, her children and grandchildren, her roots in Point Tupper and her life in Glace Bay. She was proud of her call to nursing and her commitment to family and friends. She had a generous spirit and loved to do special things for people that would bring them joy and make them smile.
She is survived by her children, Pearl (Michael) O'Brien, Halifax, Wilma (Jim Tompkins) Butts, Halifax; grandchildren, John and Daniel O'Brien, Halifax; sister, Jean Gray, Halifax; sisters-in-law, Annabel Butts, Port Hawkesbury, Catherine Swain, North Sydney; many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased in 1998 by her beloved husband of 45 years, William (Bill) Butts; and by siblings, Henry, Hilda, Kay, Roy, Lester, Earl, Charles, Glenda; brothers and sisters-in-law, John Butts, Helen Butts, David Butts, Doug Gray, Curtis Langley, Laura Swain, Lois Swain, Teddy Martin, Patsy Swain; niece, Jeanie Langley.
A private internment will take place at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney at a later date. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
Myrta was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be sadly missed and will live in our hearts forever.
