Niki Hatzigeorgiou

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Niki Hatzigeorgiou, age 81, after a long stay at the QE II Health Sciences Centre. Niki passed away peacefully on August 30, 2022, surrounded by her family.

Niki was born on December 23, 1940, in Xirokampi, Greece. In 1958, at age 17, she immigrated to Halifax through Pier 21. She and her husband, George Hatzigeorgiou, opened the Bluenose Restaurant in 1964 on Barrington Street (later relocated to Duke Street). In 1983 they opened the Bluenose II Restaurant on Hollis Street and owned and operated that restaurant until their retirement in 1993. She was a true entrepreneur - determined and extremely hardworking. Niki worked seven days a week and loved interacting with her customers.

Niki will be missed by her family and friends in both Canada and Greece. She will be remembered as a force of nature who strongly advocated for herself and her family, whom she loved dearly. Niki was also known for her sharp memory and the ability to recall the most minute details and the dates of past events with ease.

Niki leaves behind her two daughters, Litsa (George) Athanasiou and Maria (Siavash) Safaeihosseinpour. She also leaves behind her grandchildren Roula (George Eleftheriou), Dimitri, Yiannie (Gina Christakos), and Niko Athanasiou, her great-grandchildren Sofia and Niko Eleftheriou and Nova and Noella Athanasiou, her sister-in-law Maria (Charlie) Tsuluhas, and many nieces, nephews and extended family. She was predeceased by her husband George Hatzigeorgiou, infant son Yianni Hatzigeorgiou, sister Miranda Varounis, parents Mihalis and Marika Mandrapilias, and in-laws Yianni and Garifalia Hatzigeorgiou.

Arrangements are under the care of JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, Nova Scotia with visitation on September 1st from 6-9pm. Funeral will be held on September 2nd at 1pm at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church, 1146 Purcell’s Cove Road.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Niki’s memory to St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
