It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Polly Lawrence of Halifax on August 11,2012. Polly passed away at Maple Stone enhanced Care with her loving family at her side. Born May 18, 1924, Polly was the daughter of the late John and Helen (Moir) O’Neill. Polly was predeceased by her son, John and her former husband Claude, brother John O’Neill and sister Helen Bradley. Polly is survived by her sister Betty (Reg) Wild, Ottawa, her children, Claudia Nicholson, Michael (Laurie), Heather (Stuart) Dempsey, Greg and Kevin, 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Polly was born and grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Before having her family she worked as a legal secretary while pursuing a degree in social work. When her family of six children were older, she began her career as a social worker with Family Services, Province of Nova Scotia where she worked for seventeen years. With early retirement she had time to devote to her passion of art. Eventually she participated in several art groups including Needham Senior’s Group, the Citadel Portrait Group, the Seniors Art Gallery, the Association of Atlantic Area Artists, the Contemporary Art Society of Nova Scotia and the Bethany Art Group.
Polly constantly maintained a soft and gentle approach to life. She could always be counted on at any time to listen, understand and assist without judgement. Highlights of her retirement years, other than painting, included spending time with her grandchildren, gardening and photography. She thoroughly enjoyed buying specialties at various garage sales very early on Saturday mornings.
Polly’s family offer their sincere and heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Maple Stone Enhanced Care – not only for the daily care and kindness extended to their Mother, but especially for the personal devotion in her final days.
