

Hutchins, Captain Peter E. R. (Ret'd) Merchant Seaman, 87, of Timberlea, N.S. passed away December 30, 2013 at the QE II. Born in Fulham, England, on the 15th of May 1926, he was the only son of the late Alfred R. And Daisy M. (Clark). At 14 years of age he joined the training ship T.S. Indefatigable in 1940 at Rock Ferry, England. The following year he went to sea in the Merchant Navy and served on various vessels during the Second World War, working his way up the ladder. As soon as he returned to England and was of military age he joined the R.A.F.V.R., Air Sea Rescue. After leaving the service he returned to sea until his marriage to June Carol (Butcher) in 1950, at which time he took up shore employment as a field engineer with Pawer Samas. In 1957 he emigrated to Canada where he was employed by Goodyear and then Xerox in Toronto and Windsor, Ontario. He moved to Nova Scotia and once again returned to the sea. After serving in many off shore vessels he joined the Department of National Defence retiring at 62 1/2 years. He was predeceased by his dearly loved wife June Carol and his only sibling, sister Betty E. Brennan. Survived by his sons, John E. (Mari) of Finland, Steven R. of Dartmouth, Peter J. of Australia, and William R. of Dartmouth; grandchildren Jamie of Holland, Sarah and Gregory of Bedford, Ryan and Andrew of Dartmouth; several nieces and nephews and many good friends. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday, January 10th, 2014, from 6-8 p.m., at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Memorial service will be held at the Mission to Seafarers, Saturday, January 11th at 10 a.m.. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Halifax Mission to Seafarers.
