Rodger Cecil Ackles, age 82, passed away Sept 21, 2020 at his home, in the Evan Hall memory care unit in Halifax. He was born and raised in Northport Cumberland Co. one of 5 children to Evelyn and Cecil Ackles. He left home in his late teens, working with the Coastguard for one year before he joined the military where he spent 35 years working as an Air Defense Technician something, he was very proud of. His job stationed him allover Canada and the United States. He knew someone in every part of the country and enjoyed keeping touch with as many people as he could. Upon retirement he and his wife Audrey returned to Amherst where he lived until 2015 when he moved to an assisted living facility in Halifax to be near his daughters. Audrey passed away in 2006. Rodger was a proud husband and father but equally valued were his furry children, especially his cat Tippy and dog Bogey. He loved to be active with curling and golf being his favorite sports. He was a long-time legion member and an award-winning community volunteer after retiring or as he would say, “I got a few attaboys”. He worked with cadets, volunteered at the Amherst golf course with the senior men’s league and at the curling club as their ice maker. By far his number one passion was flying. He was a recreational pilot for many years and loved to discuss all things pertaining to flying and the sky, weather and outer space included.
Rodger is survived by his daughters Kim (Mike) Kelly, Dartmouth and Karen (Reggie) Cole, Halifax; Brother Hudson Ackles (Joyce), Amherst; Sisters Peggy Jewkes, Truro and Pat Ackles, Amherst; Grandchildren Brett Kelly, Madison Kelly, Kylie Cole and Braeden Cole; his cat Tippy. Predeceased by his wife Audrey Ackles (nee Trueman) and his brother Edison Ackles.
Cremation has taken place. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date in the Truemanville cemetery.
