It is with heavy hearts that the family of Roy Vernon Merry announces his passing at the age of 100 at the QEII in Halifax on Sunday, December 26, 2021. Born in New Albany, Nova Scotia, on March 27, 1921, Roy was the only child of the late Charles A and Mabel G (Todd) Merry.
Roy grew up and went to school in Lawrencetown, Annapolis County. In 1941, he went to work for the Registry of Motor Vehicles. However, Roy became very interested in the systems IBM was promoting for government, and he spent the rest of his career in various provincial government departments during the implementation of these systems. Roy retired from the Government Services Computer Division after 41 esteemed years of service.
Roy was an avid and respected musician throughout Nova Scotia, having played the violin, trumpet, guitar–harmonica combo, and more. Roy was probably best known for his confident, rich bass singing in various choral groups, barbershop groups, and church choirs.
He was a 63-year member and Past Master of the Fairview Masonic Lodge.
Roy and his family were members of the National Campers & Hikers Association, and over the course of several well-enjoyed years, trailered many, many miles together.
Roy was predeceased by his first wife Lillian (Ritchie) and second wife of 60 years Jean (MacKichan). He is survived by sons Scott (Anne), Keith (Kenda), and daughter Anne Grant (Danny – deceased), as well as his six grandchildren Jason, Heather, Alyson, Keith, Ryan, and Chelsea. Roy is also survived by his eight great-grandchildren. Family was everything to Roy, and the health and prosperity of his family helped sustain his happiness for over a century.
Due to Covid restrictions, funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery in Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia.
Donations may be made to the Fairview United Church, the Alzheimer’s Society of NS or PEI, or any charity of your choice. To leave an online condolence, please visit www.jasnowfuneralhome.com.
