It is with very heavy hearts we say goodbye to a remarkable man, husband, father, grandfather, and a true friend to many. Samuel (Phil) Shirley began his career working with Foundation Maritime where he eventually obtained his captain's ticket and joined the Department of Public Works, where he towed dredges across Nova Scotia before joining the Department of Fisheries and Department of National Defence retiring after 24 years. Phil's work ethic, ingenuity and wonderful sense of humour left an indelible impression on all those whose lives he touched.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Helen, their love was an unwavering bond that withstood 60 years of marriage. Phil's legacy lives on through his son, Chris and daughter, Corinne. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Rebecca and Sam, his sister, Kathleen Fiander, and his brother, Max Shirley. Their shared memories and experiences will forever be treasured. Samuel's extended family included numerous nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart as will many lifelong friends.
Samuel (Phil) Shirley was preceded in death by his father, James Shirley, his mother, Charlotte Fiander, his brother, James Shirley, and his stepfather, Captain Douglas Collette. Although they have departed from this world, their spirits will forever remain intertwined with Phils.
Phil will be remembered as a man of integrity, strength, and kindness. His dedication to his family, his friends, and his career serves as an inspiration to us all. May his soul find eternal peace, and may his memory continue to shine brightly in our hearts.
