

SHAW, Stephen Amos – 90, of Halifax passed away Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Veterans Memorial Hospital. Born in Margaree Valley, he was the son of the late Stephen and Catherine (Phillips) Shaw. Stephen served in the Second World War for the Northeast Novies. After the war, he married Erva Hunter and they were married for 60 years on July 1st. He then started his career in the grocery business with Dominion Stores setting up new stores across Canada, and then he purchased a local IGA store in Halifax and proceeded to open two more local IGA stores in Halifax and Dartmouth.
After retiring from the grocery business, being a very skilled carpenter, Stephen renovated Stella Maris Catholic Church for the Archdiocese of Halifax and continued the rest of his life with his strong work ethic. He took great pride in his sons and daughters, and many grandchildren; and he was an avid boxing fan and a self mastered fiddle player.
Stephen is survived by his wife Erva (Hunter), daughters; Christa (Ernie) Cook, and Sylvia (Carl) Logan, sons; Hunter (Helen) Shaw, and Tony Shaw, 10 grandchildren , 4 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister Ethel Ingraham, two brothers Calvin Shaw and Beatty Shaw.
Visitation will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax on Monday, July 12th from 2-4 & 6-8pm. Funeral service will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on Tuesday, July 13th at 10am. Rev. Joseph Thomas officiating. Burial in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson Society of Nova Scotia, Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, or the Veterans Memorial Hospital, Halifax.
