
Thomas Boyd, passed away on August 4, 2022. He was the son of the late John Charles and Eileen Boyd. He will be missed by his partner Theresa Horwill, son Kirk (Allison), grandchildren Kiera, Amanda, and Ian, daughter Patricia (Robert Plante), sister Jo-Ann Fullerton (David Rand), Theresa’s daughter Stephanie Feltham (Greg), grandson Oliver, son Duane, grandchildren Vanessa, Ryan (Jason), and Cassandra.
Tom worked for over 35 years in Ottawa and Halifax in the area of intellectual property, both in the private and public sectors. He was a former member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada. He retired as the Atlantic Region, Business Development Officer, with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO), Federal Government of Canada.
Prior to retirement and after, he continued to promote the Intellectual Property Education, Outreach Program in the Atlantic Region. As well, during his career, he actively supported and delivered this program in all ten provinces and three territories – mainly in the four Atlantic Provinces.
While working as a public servant, he received the “People’s Choice Award” by the Operation’s Branch of CIPO and a Merit Award for his contribution to the development of the Integrated Circuit Topography Act (ICTA).
Tom received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal as an outstanding volunteer. He was a business mentor, whose expertise and dedication played an instrumental role in helping launch young and emerging entrepreneurs’ careers and businesses in communities across Canada. The medal was presented by the Canadian Youth Business Foundation.
During his career and in retirement, Tom was an active member of several municipal committees in Halifax, and a board member of many charitable organizations in Halifax and Nova Scotia.
Cremation has taken place. A private family celebration is being held as per his wishes.
