PELTON, Vernon Douglas Vair – 84, passed away peacefully Monday, December 20, 2010. Born in Wolfville Ridge, he was the son of the late LeRoy Arthur Pelton and Alice Lucretia (Tanner) Pelton. Soon after, he moved with his family to West End Halifax. Vern belonged to the very successful 3rd Halifax Scout Troop. The Troop would meet at his father's Company on Preston Street. Vern's 6 brothers and 1 sister were also all involved in the Scout Troop at one time. He received the King Scout Award, the highest honour given to a Boy Scout, in 1944. He was a Scout leader, President of Halifax South District Council of Boy Scouts, President of the Provincial Council of Boy Scouts and he received the Medal of Merit for outstanding services to the Boy Scouts of Canada. Vern graduated from one of the first classes of Queen Elizabeth High School and attended Saint Mary’s College. During WW II, he was a volunteer worker for Civil Defense Canada for which he received recognition in 1945. Vern began working for his father’s construction business, Pelton and Company in 1946. In 1960 he was promoted to General Manager and Secretary-Treasurer when his father went into semi-retirement. When his father fully retired from Pelton and Company, Vern became owner and President in 1970. In 1994 Vernon retired after 48 years.
Vern was actively involved in St. Matthias Church and St. Peter’s Church. A member of the Metro Executive Group, he was also involved in the YMCA’s Phalanx Fraternity Club, Y's Men's Club and many happy years with the Halifax Gyro Club where he and his wife, Bernice, made many friends. Vern was well loved by family and friends and was happiest when he was with them. Always kind and full of humour. He loved his cottage and spent his final year and a half of life enjoying living happily at the Bay, eating ice cream and watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy in his big cozy chair and blanket (or two) with his son Scott and his home care givers. He was loved and will be dearly missed by all who knew him - “yuppy”.
