It is with great sadness that the children of Wallace D. McDougall announce his death on April 18, 2023. Born Oct 12, 1928 to Wallace and Phoebe (Martell) McDougall, Wally “Bud” had a spirited and adventurous childhood in Main-a-Dieu, CB. After graduating from a one room school house, Dad proudly attended St FX in 1946 followed by the NS Technical College where he received his B Eng in 1952. He returned to fishing with his Dad and younger beloved brother Dan for a year before accepting a job in St John’s, NF in 1954 with Fisheries Research Board. Dad loved his years in NF, travelling to outports and aiding the new province’s fishermen update their fishing practices.
There Dad met his love, M. Patricia “Patsy” O’Driscoll. They were married in 1959 and moved to Ottawa, ON, where Dad had accepted a job with Fisheries Canada. Wally and Pat made a great life for their their 5 children before returning to the Maritimes in 1976, living happily together in Clayton Park. Theirs was a respect-filled and loving union until mom’s death in 2016. While overwhelmingly sad after mom’s death, and missing her baking, Dad continued to live by his own rules the next 7 years finding great pleasure in the company of his family and friends.
Dad loved being outside, fishing, woodworking, hockey and ice skating, travel, reading the paper & completing the crossword puzzle, fixing stuff, chatting with anyone!, enjoying wine & cheese, O’Henry bars, any kind of pie (Glen - 2 pieces of coconut cream!… please), the view from his home in MaD, and praying for the Leafs to one day take home the Cup again. Alas.
Dad especially loved time with his devoted children - Ann Marie Simmons (Steven); Danny (Marie); Robert; Rosalie (Cherrie Abraham); and John (Juana Paula Masiga). He delighted in his 6 grandchildren and all their adventures - Cleary McDougall, Phoebe Simmons, Ella McDougall, and Lena, Jonah and Sacha Abraham. Predeceased by Dan (Elizabeth), Bud cherished time with the rest of his siblings who loved and treated him with great reverence and affection - Glen (Kathy) McDougall; & the Main-a-Dieu gang: Georgina (Lionel) Wadden; Janice (Wayne) Lahey; Tony (Marilyn) McDougall; nieces & nephews: Sabrina & Joe, Glen & Lesa, Mark & Sherry, Corey & Jennifer, Vanessa & Joe, Amanda & Kevin, & Chris, and many more - thanks for all the love showered on Uncle Bud every time he “went home”; the O’Driscoll’s: Martha (Mark) Bercovici; Bob (Bev); Mark; & Mary; Scott Hudson & Kim (Richard) Cardarelli; and friends around Canada.
The family would like to thank the staff at the QEII hospital, especially the 3MICU unit - lead by Dr Al-Jumaily and amazing care givers Emily, Manny, and all!; Dr J Szerb and the anesthesia team; and Dr Bobby Abraham.
Visitation 6 - 8 pm on Sat April 22. Funeral 2 pm Sun April 23 @ JA Snow Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to a charity of your choice, the QEII Hospital, or Coastal Discovery Centre in Main-a-Dieu.
Wayne & Tony - don’t burn my boat!
