Marshall, William Hugh "Bill" – It is with tremendous sadness that the family announces the passing of Bill Marshall on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at the age of 62. Cherished husband of Josephina "José". Loving father of Nicole Fraser (Andrew). Beloved Grandfather "Papa" of Kelton. Also survived by brother Michael. Born in London, Ontario to the late Jack and Joyce Marshall.
Bill started his career at the University of Guelph as a computer programmer after completing his degree in Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. He was then offered a position at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography which brought him and José to Halifax in 1977. A few years later Bill went to work for Nova Scotia Power. During his 17 years at NSP he moved from System Analyst to Manager and worked on many projects including Y2K. It was while working there that he had his first liver transplant and earned his MBA. Bill then joined Dalhousie University as the Director of Administrative Computing before heading to Abu Dhabi. He enjoyed working at the Higher Colleges of Technology, but it was the different culture and travel opportunities that truly appealed to him. The travel bug had set in long before moving to the Middle East. Bill and José had traveled extensively through Europe but moving to Abu Dhabi afforded them an opportunity to travel throughout Asia and Australia. After leaving the UAE, his last position meant another move. He became the Chief Information Officer at Antioch University in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Upon his retirement, the decision to return Halifax was an easy one as it was truly home. He also considered himself lucky as Halifax was where his daughter and grandson lived.
Though Bill certainly enjoyed his professional career, his leisure time was very important to him. He was an avid reader, non-fiction as well fiction. His father had taught him carpentry and Bill used those skills to make furniture as well as renovate a 100 year old home. He played squash for many years, loved to hike, play golf and of course the last few years became an avid bridge player. He was a formidable opponent but was always a joy to have at the bridge table.
Bill was a caring husband; in fact he and José were married 41 years, a wonderful father to Nicole and an amazing grandfather. His smile was the brightest when he spent time with his grandson Kelton. Bill lived a very fulfilling life. He was loved and will never be forgotten. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff for the compassionate care they provided. Due to amazing care he received the past 30 years Bill was able to follow his passions.
Visitation to be held at JA Snow Funeral Home Tuesday, August 27th from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Liver Foundation or the QEII Foundation. A celebration of Bill's life will be held on Sunday, October 27th. 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.at the Waegwoltic Club, 6549 Coburg Road, Halifax NS B3H 2A6
