Lurine Youngblood Wilson passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2020 in Lubbock, Texas. Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 15 at First United Methodist Chuch in Hamilton, with Pastor Samantha Chambers officiating. Burial was at Murphee Cemetery in Evant, Texas.
Lurine was born on April 22, 1931 in Vista Mountain, Texas to Leith and Leona (Mason) Youngblood. She grew up on the family farm on Vista Mountain and attended school in Evant, where she graduated as salutatorian. After high school, she attended Tarleton State University and studied Home Economics.
She married Alton “Plank” Wilson on February 21, 1953. Upon Plank’s graduation from Abilene Christian University, the couple moved to Washington, D.C. where he was stationed during the Korean War. Lurine loved living in Washington and told many stories of their time there, as well as her employment with Kraft Foods. They returned to Hamilton following Plank’s military service, where they raised their family and were active members of the community. Plank and Lurine owned Wilson Electric Service for many years, and Lurine enjoyed visiting with customers, helping with bridal registries, and serving the community.
Lurine built a happy home for her two girls, teaching them the importance of education, strength, hard work and a true love of animals. She enjoyed serving as a Blue Bird and Camp Fire counselor and attended many summer camps at Camp Tesuya. She also attended every athletic event, school activity and more that her daughters participated in over the years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hamilton, the Colonial Study Club, United Methodist Women, and she was an avid bridge player.
Lurine had a special gift of rescuing strays, and she found good homes for many puppies, kittens, dogs and cats. She also loved being “Mamama” to her two grandchildren, Mason and Jett, and she continued the tradition of going to all their athletic events, school activities, birthday parties and more, despite the distance.
Lurine was preceded in death by her parents, Leith and Leona Youngblood; husband, Alton Wilson; daughters, Susan Diane Wilson and Melinda Wilson Lawrence; and brother, James Lee Youngblood. She is survived by daughter, Melanie Wilson Carroll and husband, Kevin of Lubbock; grandchildren, Mason Catherine and Jett Wilson Carroll; and son-in-law Renn Lawrence of Fort Worth.
